‘Democracy annihilated’ on Jan 5, 2014: Khaleda Zia
Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Thursday accused ruling Awami League of annihilating democracy and snatching voting rights on January 5, 2014, and urged all to take a vow to establish a pro-people government.
‘On the day of stanching democracy and voting rights, on January 5, take a pledge to install a government of people,’ she tweeted in Bangla.
Khaleda Zia posted the message on her tweeter account when she was staying at Bakshibazar makeshift court to attend the hearing on Zia Charitable Trust and Zia Orphanage corruption cases filed against her.
Through another tweet message in English, she also said, ‘Democracy was abolished and voting rights was scrapped On Jan 5 [2014]. Let's devote ourselves to restore [restoring] democracy and voting rights.’
Earlier, BNP announced to hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan on January 7 and take out a procession with black flags wearing black badges on January 5, to register its protest against 10th parliamentary elections, boycotted by the party.
Awami League observed the day as 'victory of democracy' by holding two rallies -- one at Bangabandhu Avenue and the other at Russell Square-- marking the third anniversary of the 10th parliamentary polls.
