Dhaka: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said the local government bodies have been given enough power as those institutions are being strengthened to decentralise power.

"The local government bodies would play a key role in the development of primary education side by side with solving various problems of the people," she said.

The premier made the remarks when Mayor of Brent, London, Parvez Ahmed paid a courtesy call on the PM at her official Ganabhaban residence in Dhaka on Saturday evening.

Tulip Rizwana Siddiq, a member of British House of Commons and a granddaughter of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and a niece of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, was also present at the meeting.

After the meeting, PM's press secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters.

Congratulating the Bangladeshi-origin mayor of Brent, the premier expressed happiness that Bangladeshi diaspora in the UK is taking greater interest in British politics and contributing to their host community.

She also expressed happiness over the induction of two Bangladeshi-origin MPs -- Tulip Siddiq and Dr Rupa Haque -- into the shadow cabinet of UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn.

While talking about election of three Bangladeshi-origin MPs in the British House of Commons, the prime minister said: "She is proud to see three Bangladeshi daughters in UK parliament". Tulip Siddiq, Rushanara Ali, who hails from Biswanath in Sylhet, and Dr Rupa Huq, who hails from Pabna, were elected MPs from Labour Party in the May 7, 2015 UK general elections.

When the Brent mayor raised various problems of the expatriate Bangladeshis living in the UK, Sheikh Hasina said she would do her best to help solve those problems.

PM's Principal Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury and PMO Secretary Suraiya Begum were present on the occasion.
