Seven-murder case verdict example of justice: Quader

Dhaka: Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Monday said the Narayanganj seven-murder case verdict has manifested that justice is delivered under the Awami League government.

Talking to reporters after joining a programme at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in the city, he also warned that the offenders, no matter how much clout they have, will not be able to go unpunished. “No criminal will be spared.”

A Narayanganj court on Monday sentenced 26 people, including ex-city councillor Nur Hossain, to death and nine others to different jail terms in the two cases filed over the sensational seven-murder incident.

Obaidul Quader, also the Road Transport and Bridges Minister, hoped that the apex court will uphold the lower court’s verdict of the seven-murder case to ensure punishment to the offenders.

Awami league’s publicity and publication cell projected a documentary at the BSA on BNP-Jamaat’s violent acts and fire terrorism.

Inaugurating the programme, Quader said their government will solve the country’s problems in the light of the constitution.

About BNP’s demand for dialogue, he said, “If there’s any scope for talks in the constitution, it will be held for the sake of democracy. But, there’s no option to go beyond the charter.”

Mentioning that the President had a dialogue with BNP over the current issue (formation of EC), the AL general secretary questioned, “What’s the use of another dialogue with the Prime Minister? The next election will be held in due time as per the constitution.”

He said BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia had indecently turned down the Prime Minister’s offer for dialogue before January-5 election in 2014 and thus destroyed the environment for talks.

Stating that BNP had kept shut its chairperson’s office gate when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina went there to console Khaleda following her son’s death, Quader said, “You (Khaleda) had closed the door of dialogue by shutting down your house’s door at that time.”
