Dhaka: Describing the 1/11 government as illegal and unconstitutional one, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Moudud Ahmed on Saturday demanded formation of an ‘inquiry commission’ to put on trial those who unconstitutionally grabbed power in 2007.

“It’s mentioned in the current constitution that if any one grabs power or rules the country unconstitutionally will be given death penalty. Those who took over in 2007 unconstitutionally they ruled the country for two years, destroying the economy and all institutions. Won’t they face trial?” he said.

The BNP leader further said, “I demand that an inquiry commission be formed, headed by an ex-retired chief justice, to look into the activities of those, including Fakhruddin and Moyeenuddin, grabbed power illegally and unconstitutionally.”

Moudud came up with the remarks at National Press Club while unveiling a book titled ‘Jaruri Ainer Sarkarer Dui Bachar’ (Two year’s of the emergency-rule government) written by another BNP standing committee member Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain.

He said their party, if voted to power, will punish the masterminds of the 1/11 regime and those led grabbing power illegally at that time.

The BNP leader said 1/11 took place as part of a deep-rooted plot of a quarter to turn Bangladesh into a failed state. “Fakhruddin Ahmed’s appointment as the head of the government was unconstitutional.”

Addressing the programme, EX-VC of Dhaka University Prof Emajuddin Ahmed said the 1/11 incident was absolutely a military takeover. “It can’t be described as military-backed government. In fact, it doesn’t fall under any form of government as it was a military coup.”
