Dhaka: Law Minister Anisul Huq on Saturday said the present government is committed to protecting human rights and dignity of Bangladesh’s all citizens.
“The government is sincerely working to protect human rights and dignity of all the citizens of the country,” he said while addressing the inaugural session of a seminar in Dhaka.
National Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh arranged the seminar at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel.
The minister said the government has established human rights bodies alongside enactment of strong laws and promotes non-government organisations and social organisations to work on the human rights.
He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formed the National Human Rights Commission immediately after forming the government in 2009.
“With her (Sheikh Hasina) sincerity and assistance, the capacity of the commission has increased massively. The commission continues to work independently with competence for protecting and improving the human rights,” he went on.
Noting that the poor used to be deprived of rights of taking legal shelter due to their insolvency and other reasons, he said the Prime Minister enacted the Legal Aid Services Act for ensuring their rights.
Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission Kazi Reazul Hoque presided over the function.
Chairman of National Human Rights Commission of India justice HL Dattu, noted lawyer Barrister M Amir-Ul Islam, UNDP Bangladesh Country Director Sudipto Mukerjee and former chairman of Human Rights Commission of Bangladesh Justice Amirul Kabir Chowdhury also spoke on the occasion.
