Cox’s Bazar: A three-member delegation of the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State visited two Rohingya camps in Ukhia and Teknaf upazilas of the district on Sunday.

The delegation members are Win Mra, Chair of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission; Ghassan Salame', former UN Special Advisor to Secretary-General (2003-2006); and Aye Lwin, Core Member and Founder of Religious for Peace, Myanmar, according to Foreign Ministry officials.

The delegation reached a new Rohingya camp at Balukhali in Ukhia upazila around 11:40am and talked to the new arrivals of the Rohingya and saw the situation on the ground.

During the hour-long discussion, some of the Rohingya people informed the delegation that they fled Rakhine to Bangladesh after being failed to endure the torture unleashed by the military of the Myanmar government.

They said the army persons had shot many Rohingyas to death after picking them up from their houses and torched their houses.

Later, the Rakhine Commission team visited another Rohingya camp at Leda in Teknaf upazila.

The three-member delegation arrived in Dhaka on Saturday to discuss the Rohingya issue and see the situation on the ground.

They will also meet Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali after their Cox's Bazar visit before they leave Dhaka on February 1.

Over 65,000 Myanmar nationals crossed border and took shelter in Bangladesh since October 9 last year.

The Myanmar government established the Advisory Commission on Rakhine State, also known as Rakhine Commission, to find lasting solutions to complex issues in the Rakhine State.

The nine-member Advisory Commission, composed of three international and six national persons of eminence, is Myanmar's national initiative to resolve protracted issues in the region. The commission is chaired by former Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan.
