HC seeks govt explanation on enacting law for EC

Dhaka: The High Court on Monday issued a rule asking the government to explain why it should not be directed to formulate a law for constituting the Election Commission (EC).
An HC bench comprising Justice M Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice JBM Hassan passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Eunus Ali Akond.
The cabinet secretary, the law secretary and the CEC were asked to respond the rule within four weeks, said advocate Eunus while talking to reporters.
Eunus filed the writ petition with the HC on January 11 seeking its directive to formulate a law as per article 118 of the Constitution for constituting the EC.
He filed a supplementary petition with the HC on Saturday seeking a stay on the activities of the six-member search committee formed by the President for reconstituting the new EC.
However, the court did not deliver any verdict over the supplementary petition today (Monday), said Eunus.
President Abdul Hamid on Wednesday formed a six-member search committee, headed by Supreme Court's Appellate Division judge Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, for reconstituting the next Election Commission (EC).
