Dhaka: Two alleged robbers were killed in a reported gunfight with police at Jigatala on the Rangpur‐Sayedpur Highway in Taraganj upazila of Rangpur early on Wednesday.

The deceased are Mashiur Rahman, in his thirties, a resident of Bhimpur Darjipara in Taraganj upazila and Bijoy, in his thirties.

Acting on a tip‐off that a gang of robbers was preparing to commit robbery in the area, a police team conducted a drive there at about 3:20am, said officer‐in‐charge of Taraganj Police Station Abdul Latif Miah.

Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on the policemen, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.

At one stage, Mashiur and Bijoy were caught in the line of fire and seriously injured while the other members of the gang managed to flee the scene.

The injured were taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital where doctors declared them dead.

Four policemen were also injured in the gunfight.

Police recovered two pistols, three bullets and several sharp weapons from the scene.
