Gazipur: The prison authorities read out the death warrant to condemned leader of the banned militant organisation Harkat-ul-Jihad Mufti Abdul Hannan at Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazripur.
The death warrants were read out to Mufti Hannan and two others after the warrants reached the jail on 3 February, said Kashimpur High Security Central Jail’s Senior Jail Super Mizanur Rahman.
Apart from Mufti Hanna, two other death row convicts, for the grenade attack on ex-British envoy to Bangladesh Anwar Choudhury in 2004, are — Sharif Shahedul Alam and Delwar Hossain alias Ripon.

On 7 December, 2016, the Supreme Court upheld the death penalty of Mufti Abdul Hannan, and two others in the case after rejecting the appeal filed by Mufti Hannan and Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul seeking a review of the High Court verdict that upheld their death sentence.
A four-member bench, headed by Chief Justice SK Sinha, passed the order.
On 11 February, 2016, a High Court bench, comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Amir Hossain, delivered the verdict upholding the death sentence of three of the accused — Mufti Abdul Hannan, Sharif Shahedul Alam and Delwar Hossain alias Ripon—and life imprisonment of two others—Mufti Hannan’s brother Mohibullah and Mufti Moinuddin—handed down by the lower court.
Following the verdict, Mufti Hannan and Sharif Shahedul Alam alias Bipul, filed the appeal with the Appellate Division bench concerned on 14 July, 2016.
Although Ripon did not file any appeal petition, the court itself appointed a lawyer on behalf of him to ensure justice for a condemned convict.
On 30 November, the Supreme Court started hearing the appeal.
