Jamaat activist killed in Pirojpur ‘shootout’

Pirojpur: A Jamaat-e-Islami activist was killed by own bullets in a ‘gunfight’ with police at local bus stand in Nesarabad upazila early Saturday.
The deceased was Bachchu, an activist of the Jamaat upazila unit and son of Abdur Jabbar of Jagannathkathi in the upazila.
Pirojpur circle assistant superintendent of police Abdul Quader Begh said police arrested Bacchu along with petrol from Nesarabad area at about 9:00pm on Friday night.
After interrogation, Bacchu said one Delwar Maulana, an activist of the local unit Jamaat, gave him
Tk 100 for buying petrol in a bid to carry out an arson attack at the local market, the police officer added.
Later police along with Bacchu conducted a drive in Nesarabad bus stand at about 2:30am.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the supporters of Jamaat-Shibir who gathered in the area for carrying out sabotage, hurled several crude bombs and opened bullets at police, prompting them to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.
Bachchu received injuries with bullets fired from his side.
Later Bacchu was rushed to Nesarabad Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared him dead.
Two assistant sub-inspectors— Mamun and Babar— of Swarupkathi Police Station sustained injuries.
