Former Jasad leader killed in Pabna ‘gunfight’

Pabna: A former leader of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Jasad) killed in a reported gunfight with police at Bera upazila in Pabna in the early hours of Wednesday.

The deceased is Nizam Uddin Nistar alias Jahid. Police claimed he was the leader of banned organisation, Sharbahara Party.

It has been known that Nizam Uddin Nistar was the general secretary of Pabna Sadar upazila’s Jasad wing. On 12 February, the upazila committee of Jasad has been annulled.

Pabna additional superintendent of police (ASP) Gautam Biswas said being tipped off, two extremists groups were involved in a gunfight at Dorirchar in Bera upazila, police went to the spot. Sensing the presence of police, the miscreants opened fire to them at about 4:30am. Police also fired back and left Nistar bullet-hit.

Later, Nistar was taken to Bera Upazila Health Complex, where duty doctors declared him dead.

Police also recovered two pistols and 12 bullets from the spot.

The Pabna Sadar police Officer-in-charge (OC) Abdur Razzak said Nizam Uddin Nistar was one of the accused of in a case filed over three police members killing at Dhalarchar of Charbalrampur in the upazila. He was also wanted in 12 other cases.

The OC said Nistar was the main associate of Shahajadpur municipality Mayor Halimul Haque Miru’s younger borther Habibul Haque Mintu.

Mintu is the former general secretary of Pabna district Jasad.

However, Shahajadpur Mayor Halimul Haque Miru is the accused of a case filed over the killing of Samakal reporter Abdul Hakim Shimul.

Abdul Hakim Shimul, Shahjadpur upazila correspondent of Daily Samakal, sustained bullet injuries during a clash between two associate bodies of Awami League in Shahjadpur 2 February.

Later, he died on the way to Dhaka on 3 February afternoon.
