Suspected robber killed in Khulna ‘gunfight’

Khulna: An alleged robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Khoiyabazar area under Harintana in Khulna city early on Friday.

The deceased is Zia Sana alias Hat Kata Zia alias Bomaru Sana, resident of Gutudia village of Dumuria thana.

Being tipped off that a gang of robber was taking preparation for committing robbery, a team of police conducted a drive in the area around 2:30am, Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Harintana Police Station.

Sensing the presence of police, the robbers opened fire on the law enforcers, prompting them to retaliate that triggered a gunfight.

At one stage, Zia was caught in the line of fire and injured critically while others managed to flee the scene, he said.

He was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Four policemen were also injured in the gunfight.

Police also recovered a pistol, four bullets, a pipe gun and 50 pieces of Yaba tablets from the spot.

Zia was wanted in 10 cases, including of murder and robbery, with different police stations of the city.
