Workers’ death spark road blockade, vandalism

Gazipur: The agitating workers blocked the Dhaka-Tangail Highway and the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway and vandalised around 50 vehicles after two apparel workers were killed in separate road accidents in Gazipur on Tuesday morning.
Police brought the situation under control by hurling tear shells and rubber bullets.
Earlier, Mazharul Islam, Vintex Denim Limited sewing operator was knocked down by a truck at Masterbari in Sripur, Gazipur while Nosimon, in her forties, also a resident of Lalmonirhat, killed as a bus ran over her in Konabari.
Konabari police post sub-inspector Mobarak Hossain said a Kaliakaur-bound bus knocked down Nosimon, a worker of Designtext sweater factory, in Konabari at about 8:00am and left her dead on the spot.
Angry workers blocked the Dhaka-Tangail Highway following the death of Nosimon and vandalised 50 vehicles, said the Konabari police.
Highway police and Industrial police dispersed the agitated workers by firing tear shells and rubber bullets. Transport movement was snapped for an hour due to the blockade.
Industrial police Sripur zone ASP Tahmidul Islam said Mazhar was critically injured when a truck ran over him at Gorgoria of Mastarbari in Sripur. Later, he was died on his way to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Angry workers blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at about 9:00am. Police drove away the workers and the transport movement resumed at about 10:00am, said Tahmidul Islam.
