Man killed in ‘gunfight ‘

Lakshmipur: An alleged leader of a robber gang was killed in reported gunfight with members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Bhaberhat area of Sadar upazila in the early hours of Tuesday.
Police claimed the deceased, Nasir Uddin, is a kingpin of the robber gang, ‘Nasir Bahini’, also a resident of Dettapara village in the upazila.
He was wanted in 30 cases, including of murder, robbery, extortion and abduction, police said.
A team of RAB 4 conducted a drive in Bhaberhat area while a gang of robbers was preparing to commit robbery in the area, said RAB 4 official major Mohammad Shakib Siddique.
Sensing the presence of the elite force members, the robbers opened fire on them and the law enforcers also fired back which triggered a gunfight.
Nasir was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while his associates managed to flee the scene, said the RAB officer.
Later, RAB recovered the body and sent it to Sadar Hospital, said the Chandraganj police.
Four RAB members were also injured during the gunfight, said police.
A pistol, an LG, a magazine and 15 bullets were recovered from the spot.
