Comilla:  A suspected robber was killed and two policemen suffered bullet wounds in a reported gunfight with detectives at Loribagh in Burichang upazila of Comilla early on Wednesday.

Sub-inspector Shah Kamal Akond of Detective Branch (DB) of the district said the deceased Mostafa, in his thirties, was a member of a gang of robbers.

The SI said two of the associates of Mostafa gave detailed information about their gang and its activities while making their confessional statements before a court on Tuesday afternoon in a case filed over killing jewellery trader Abdul Kalam Azad on 21 February.

Acting on their information, a team of detectives, led by Additional Superintendent of Police Abdullah Al Mamun, conducted a drive at Loribagh to arrest the other members of the gang around 12:10am.

However, sensing the DB men’s presence, the robbers opened fire on them, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate that triggered the gunfight.

The two groups traded several gunshots during the gunfight when Mostafa, ASP Mamun and constable Dayal Kanti suffered bullet wounds.

Mostafa was then taken to Comilla Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 12:45am.

Two DB men were admitted to police hospital.
