Badrul gets life term for attempting to murder Khadija
Sylhet: A Sylhet court sentenced Badrul Alam, a former a BCL leader of its Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) unit, to life term imprisonment for attempting to murder college girl Khadija Akter Nargis in Sylhet.
Sylhet Metropolitan Sessions Judge Akbar Hossain Mridha announced the verdict on Wednesday.
On 5 March, Akbar Hossain Mridha fixed the date for delivering its verdict in the case.
Of the total 37 witnesses, 34 made their depositions before the court in the case.
On 1 March, the case was transferred to the Metropolitan Session’s Judge Court from the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court as the court lacks the authority to give the highest punishment.
On 5 December, a court started hearing the case filed against suspended Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leader Badrul Alam for stabbing the college girl.
Khadija Akhter Nargis, daughter of Mashuk Miah of Biswanath upazila and a student of Sylhet Govt Women’s College, was stabbed on her way home from college on 3 October.
Badrul hacked Khadija mercilessly after she reportedly rejected his offer to have an affair with him.
Hearing the victim’s screams, locals rescued Khadija and caught Badrul from the spot and handed him over to police after giving him a good thrashing.
Khadija was taken to Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital from where she was moved to Dhaka for treatment.
Police submitted chargesheet against the lone accused, Badrul, on 8 November.
The court indicted Badrul Alam in the case on 29 November.
After more than three months of treatment and intensive care, Khadija returned home from the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP), Savar on 24 February.
On 26 February, Khadija appeared before the court for the first time and made her deposition.
