Two killed in Satkhira ‘gunfight’

Satkhira: Two men were killed in a reported gunfight with police at Tala upazila in Satkhira in the early hours of Sunday.

The deceased are Bidyut Bachhar and his associate Sheikh Talha.

Police claimed two of their officials, Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) Shafiuzzaman, and constable Nazmul, were also injured during the gunfight. Later, they received primary treatment.

The Tala police Officer-in-charge (OC) Hassan Hafizur Rahman said being tipped off a gang of robbers were taking preparation for robbery at the village of Rahimabad under upazila’s Khalilnagar union, two police teams led by Sub-inspector (SI) Mozaffar, and SI Nazmul went to the spot. Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the robbers hurled crude bombs and opened fire to them.

Police also fire back, which triggered a gunfight at about 3:30am. Later, police found two of the robbers dead on the spot.

The bodies were sent to Satkhira Sadar Hospital for autopsy.

The OC quoting local people said Bidyut is a resident of the village of Maguradanga under Magura union in Tala, while Sheikh Talha was a resident of the village of Sujansaha.

Police also claimed to recover a one-shooter gun, a foreign pistol, a machete, a hammer and other equipment from the spot.

The police official said Bidyut Bachhar was the leader of an outlaw party, Purba Bangla Communist Party. He was wanted in 14 cases including five robberies, three arms cases, while Talha was an accused of a violent case.
