4 killed in Meherpur ‘gunfight’ with police

Meherpur: Four people were killed in a reported gunfight with police at Sadar upazila in Meherpur in the early hours of Tuesday.

The deceased are Saddam Hossain, Ramesh, Shohag, and Kanon, all were in their twenties, residents of village of Sonapur in the upazila.

Police claimed they were accused of a double murder case filed over the killing of Abdul Majid and Asadul of the same village.

The Meherpur police said a police team chased a gang of miscreants at about 2:30am. The miscreants opened fire to police as they neared Nurpur intersection area, police also fired back which triggered a gunfight and left four miscreants dead on the spot.

Police claimed six police members including district assistant superintendent of police (ASP) Ahsan Habib were also injured during the gunfight. They were taken to Meherpur General Hospital, where they received primary treatment.

The Meherpur General Hospital’s Emergency Unit physician Abu Ehsan Raju said four bullet-hit men were brought to the hospital at about 3:45am. However, they were died before bringing to the hospital.

The bodies were kept at the hospital’s morgue.
