PDB inks power pacts with Adani, Reliance Power

Dhaka: Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) on Saturday inked two mega power project deals with India’s Adani Group and Reliance Power.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s agenda for the two-day visit to Bangladesh included, apart from the Land Boundary Agreement, inking of the power project deals.
While Adani Group sealed the deal for two power projects—one in Bangladesh and one in India—for 1,600 MW capacity, Reliance Power signed an agreement for a 3,000 MW project in Bangladesh.
‘The plans for the power projects are in line with Modi’s vision of building an EU-modelled economic zone connecting Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan with India’, reports the Indian Express.
‘The two projects are expected to help Bangladesh achieve its 20,000-MW target by 2020. The projects will also help ease a 7,000-MW power deficiency in the country’.
Reliance Power and Adani Group will invest nearly $5 billion to set up the power plants.
Reliance Power will set up a 3,000 megawatt power plant based on imported LNG at an invetment of about $3 billion.
Adani Group will set up a 1,600 MW coal-fired power plant at southern Bangladesh island of Maheshkhali at an investment of $2 billion.
The projects were originally to be signed off before or after the Prime Minister’s visit, but Dhaka insisted that the pacts be inked during the two-day tour. While a senior vice president from Reliance Power signed the deal on behalf of the organisation, Gautam Adani, who has been an unofficial part of most of the Prime Minister’s delegations abroad, was personally present to ink the pact.
