Accusing the ruling party men of violating the election code of conduct ahead of Comilla City Corporation polls, BNP on Monday alleged that the Election Commission (EC) and the local administration are taking no action against it.

‘The ruling party’ is increasingly violating the election code of conduct and indulging in terrorism as the election is getting nearer. They’re carrying out electioneering with big motorcades. A number of ministers and MPs are also trying to influence the polls in many ways,’ said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, reports UNB.

Speaking at a press conference, he further said, ‘Though complaints have been lodged with the returning officer concerned, there has been no effective action. The local administration is also reluctant about it.’

The BNP leader demanded the EC create a congenial atmosphere for holding the polls in a fair and credible manner. ‘Take proper steps so that the election can be held without anybody’s influence and voters can exercise their franchise freely.’

The election to the Comilla City Corporation is scheduled to be held on Thursday.

About the recent militant incidents, Rizvi said people are passing their days with fear and anxiety as the government is keeping them in the dark about the militancy issue.

He claimed that people believe the government is trying to make a political gain by keeping alive the militancy issue.

‘The Prime Minister talks about eliminating militancy whenever any militant act occurs, but can’t do that. The militancy issue was brought in the limelight like a bioscope as other sensitive issues like defence deal have emerged.

Rizvi said there is no alternative to restoring the rule of law and uniting all parties and people of all walks of life to eliminate militancy.

Referring to media reports, Rizvi said the government has finalised to sign four Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) relating to defence during the Prime Minister’s April visit to India, he said the government is not making public the hidden and dangerous motives behind the MoUs.

He warned that signing any deal or MoU with India will not bring anything good for Bangladesh. ‘Instated, it’ll be a serious threat to the country’s independence and sovereignty.’
