BNP smells govt’s ‘evil plan’ behind Comilla city polls

BNP on Tuesday feared that the government has an ‘evil plan’ over the Comilla City Corporation election to be held on Thursday.
Speaking at a press conference at party’s Nayapaltan central office, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi again demanded the Election Commission install CCTV cameras at least at 43 vulnerable polling stations for the sake of a fair election.
‘Observing the overall situation, we fear the government has an evil plan over the Comilla City Corporation election. The signs of their (govt) ill plans have started getting exposed as the ruling party men are resorting to violence, irregularities and widespread violation of the election code of conduct,’ he said, reports UNB.
The BNP leader also alleged that supporters of the Awami League mayoral candidate are destroying banners, posters and leaflets of the BNP mayoral runners and intimidating voters in presence of law enforcers.
Voters, BNP leaders and activists in the Comilla city’s nine wards in southern part of the city have got panicked over the desperate attitude of the ruling party activists and flexing muscle by them, said Rizvi.
Referring to BNP delegation’s Monday’s meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Nurul Huda, Rizvi said they requested the CEC to set up CCTV cameras at every polling station ‘We’ve urged them to install CCTV cameras at minimum 43 vulnerable centres.’
He said they are waiting to see what action the EC will take against election irregularities, violence and violation of code of conduct as the CEC assured them of taking stern action.
About the Prime Minister’s India tour, he said the government is going ahead with a plan to sign a defence deal with India ignoring the hope and aspiration of the country’s people and political parties adding that Bangladesh’s sovereignty will be at stake if the deal is signed.
He urged the Prime Minister to shelve her plan to sign the deal during her India tour.
