Barisal: A former constable who was sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment in sensational Narayanganj seven-murder cases was arrested at Hizla upazila in Barisal on Friday.

The arrestee was Habibur Rahman, former bodyguard of sacked RAB-11 official Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, who was sentenced to death in the cases, and son of Ahad Box of Kanchanpara village in Naria upazila of Shariatpur.

Fleeing the elite force after the murders, Habibur joined Bangladesh River Police hiding his identity. He was posted at Tak river police outpost in Hizla as an assistant sub-inspector.

A team police from Naria Police Station arrested him from the outpost at about 2:00pm, said Akhteruzzaman, superintendent of Barisal Police.

Earlier, the sentence warrant of Habib reached his home on February 14.

On January 16 last, a Narayanganj court sentenced 26 people, including sacked RAB officer Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, to death and nine others to different jail terms in the sensational seven-murder cases.

On April 27 in 2014, seven people, including councillor Nazrul Islam of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) and Advocate Chandan Sarker, were abducted from Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road. The bodies of six of them were recovered from the Shitalakhya River three days after the abduction, while another from the same river the following day.
