Sylhet: A Sylhet court on Monday placed local photojournalist Idris Ali on police custody for seven days in connection with the blogger Ananta Bijoy Das murder.

Judge of the Metropolitan Cognisance Court-3 Farzana Yesmin passed the order after Inspector of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police Arman Ali produced him before her court seeking 15 days remand.

In his forwarding, the CID officer described Idris as a militant group member, saying he was directly and indirectly involved in the blogger Ananta murder.

Earlier, a team of CID arrested Idris, a photojournalist of the Daily Sabuj Sylhet published in Sylhet, from his residence early in the morning.

Blogger Ananta, also an activist of Sylhet Ganajagaran Mancha, was hacked to death by a group of assailants in broad daylight at Subidbazar Bankalapara in Sylhet on 12 May.

On 13 May, Rateshwar Das, elder brother of Ananta Bijoy, filed a case against four people with the Airport Police Station.

Ananta Bijoy was also a writer in the ‘Mukto-Mona blog’, founded by blogger Avijit Roy who had been murdered two and a half months ago after he came home from the USA.

On 25 May, Police Headquarters asked the Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP) to hand over the blogger killing case to the CID for investigation.
