3 get death penalty for killing university student in Gazipur
Gazipur: A Gazipur court on Thursday sentenced three people to death and a woman to life term imprisonment for killing BBA student Riyad after abduction in 2013.
The condemned convicts are—Rezaul Karim alias Sagar of Tangail district, Jamal Uddin of Jamalpur district and Shahabuddin of Moulvibazar.
The court also fined the condemned convicts Tk 20,000 each while lifer Sanzida Akter Lipi, wife of condemned convict Sagar, Tk 10,000.
According to the prosecution, Abdur Rahman alias Riyad, 25, a BBA student of Uttara University and son of Khaza Mainuddin of Shenbag upazila in Noakhali district, used to live in Tongi for study purpose.
Riyadh was acquainted with Lipi while studying in a coaching centre. Later, Lipi took Riyadh to her husband Sagar in Jamalpur with a promise to give him a job on 23 July, 2013. Sagar demanded Tk 30 lakh as ransom to Riyadh’s father on that day.
As they failed to realise the ransom money, Sagar along with his associates killed Riyadh and hanged him from a tree. A case was file in this connection.
Later, Police submitted a chargesheet against the four people.
After examining the records and 19 witnesses, District and Session Judge AKM Enamul Haque handed down the verdict.
