An hour punishment for Zafarullah
Dhaka: International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Wednesday ordered Gonoshastho Trust founder Dr Zafarullah Chowdhury to stand on the courtroom dock for an hour and imposed Tk 5,000 fine for commenting on British journalist Devid Burgman’s punishment.
ICT 2 led by Justice Obaidul Hossain also handed over a month of imprisonment for him if he doesn’t pay the monetary penalty.
However, 22 eminent persons, who submitted their statement to the court, were acquitted from the charges.
Earlier, on 23 February, tribunal released 15 persons from the charges.
On 14 January, the ICT-2 issued contempt notice against 49, who had expressed concern through a statement published on the Bangla daily Prothom Alo after British journalist and blogger David Bergman’s punishment by the tribunal, asking them to explain their statement and conduct.
Based on their explanations, the tribunal on two different dates exonerated 25 from the allegation of committing contempt of court. On 01 April, the tribunal exonerated Rezaur Rahman from the allegation.
