Chandpur: A mobile court in Chandpur on Wednesday sentenced 24 fishermen to two years’ imprisonment for catching Hilsa from the River Meghna in Haimchar upazila of Chandpur, defying the government ban.

Members of Coast Guard and river police conducted a drive in the river and arrested the 24 fishermen along with 1lakh square meters of current nets while catching Hilsa in the afternoon, Hasanuzzaman, a sub‐inspector at Haimchar Nilkamal Police camp.

All the fishermen, hailing from Barisal, Lakshmipur, Shariatpur and Chandpur, were produced before a mobile court hours after their arrest.

Later, the mobile court, led by UNO Abu Hasnat Mohammad Mainuddin, jailed them for two years.
