2 killed in Meherpur ‘gunfight’

Meherpur: Two people were killed in a reported gunfight with police at Gangi upazila in Meherpur in the early hours of Friday.

Four members of police were also injured during the incident, claimed police.

The deceased are Shipon, and Alamgir, both are residents of Chandpur area of Gangni.

The Gangni police Officer-in-charge (OC) Anwar Hossain said being informed about extortion police conducted a drive at SB Brick Field near the Malsadaha-Hariadaha road in the upazila.

Sensing the presence of police, the suspected extortionist opened fire to them. Police also fired back which triggered a reported gunfight at about 3:00am. The gunfight left two people injured. Later, they were taken to Gangni Upazila Health Complex where doctors declared them dead.

Four police officers—the Gangni police Sub-inspector (SI) Shankar Kumar Ghosh, Assistant Sub-inspector (ASI) Rafique, Constable Motiur and Khairul,—were taken to the hospital as they got injured during the gunfight, said Anwar Hossain.

The OC said police also recovered two bombs, a shuttergun, two bullets, and two machetes from the spot.
