Rajshahi: The inquest report of the forensic department of Rajshahi Medical College and Hospital (RMCH) has described the death of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Assistant Commissioner Sabbir Ahmed Sarfaraz as suicide.

Enamul Hoque, assistant professor of RMCH forensic department, said: ‘Sabbir was found dead sitting on a sofa with a thin nylon cord tied around his neck while another part of the rope was tied with the grill of the window. The initial investigation suggests the police official committed suicide as the door was locked from inside and there was no alternative way to enter the room.

‘However, the actual reason behind his death could be known after the post‐mortem report.’

Rejecting the inquest report, Sabbir’s father Obaidullah Haque, also a former RMP DIG, said: ‘My son cannot commit suicide. The actual reason behind his death can be confirmed once the autopsy report comes.’

While talking to the UNB, Sabbir’s cousin Meherul said: ‘Sabbir came directly to my farmhouse at Sheikhpara in the city instead of going home immediately after discharging his duty around 3:30am. He left my farmhouse at 6:30 am for his Officers’ Mess Hall.

‘Later, we heard that he was found dead.’

The assistant commissioner was found dead sitting on a sofa with a cord tied around his neck at RMP Officers Mess Hall.

The body was noticed around 9:00am Saturday.

Sabbir was a 31st batch Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) cadre. He used to live in his own house at Upashahar along with his wife and daughter.
