2 killed in Jhenaidah ‘gunfight’

Jhenaidah: Two men were killed in a suspected gunfight at Kotchandpur of Jhenaidah, claimed the members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
The deceased are regional leader of banned organisation Purba Bangla Communist Maidul Islam Rana, in his fifties, and his associate Alim Uddin, in his sixties.
RAB-6 Jhenaidah Camp Commanding Officer Major Monir Ahammed and Superintendent of police (ASP) Abul Kalam Azad claimed suspected gunfight took place on the field of the village of Bahrampur under Kushna Union at about 12:30am on Wednesday.
RAB members also recovered a foreign-made pistol, two guns, 15 bullets, a machete, and two mobile phone sets from the spot.
The RAB officials said three RAB members were also injured during the gunfight. The injured are Habildar Mohsin Ali, Constables Rafiqul Islam, and Abul Kalam Azad. They were taken to Kotcahndpur Upazila Health Complex.
RAB said being tipped off outlawed party members were gathering on the Nagartala field of the village of Bahrampur, RAB members conducted drive in the area. Sensing the presence of law enforcers, the extremists party members opened fire to the RAB members.
RAB also fired back to the outlawed party members and left Maidul Islam Rana and Alam Uddin injured. Other members of the party managed to flee from the spot.
They were taken to Kotchandpur Upazila Health Complex, where physician Faruq Hussain declared their death.
The Kotchandpur police Officer-in-charge Biplob Kumar Saha said Maidul Islam Rana was a resident of the village of Bakshipur in Kotchandpur, while Alim Uddin was from the village of Bahrampur.
Both of them were wanted in several cases including murder case.
