Bangladesh 'aware’ of Qatar-Saudi Arabia row

Dhaka: Though tightlipped over the row between Bangladesh's two friendly countries -- Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and State of Qatar -- Dhaka says it is 'aware' of it.
Asked about the matter, Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali at a press briefing at the Foreign Ministry on Sunday said Bangladesh is aware of it but he would not elaborate.
The press conference was arranged to brief media about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's bilateral visit to Sweden.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam and Foreign Secretary M Shahidul Haque were also present.
Both Saudi Arabia and Qatar host a large number of Bangladeshi workers who are contributing to their economies apart from contributions to Bangladesh economy.
Bangladesh maintains its core foreign policy - friendship to all and malice towards none.
Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain cut their ties with Qatar on June 5 accusing it of patronising terrorism.
Earlier, a diplomat told UNB that Bangladesh is closely monitoring the evolving situation after Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt have cut diplomatic ties with Qatar over its alleged support to terrorism which Qatar says 'baseless'.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar expressed deep regret over the decision of Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain to close their borders and airspace and cut off diplomatic relations.
"Such measures are unjustified and based on baseless and unfounded allegations," reads the statement seen by UNB.
