Dhaka: After several days of searing heat, a spell of rain brought some relief to the city dwellers on Sunday afternoon.

The rain started coming down around 5pm, said the Met office which recorded 8 mm of rainfall in the capital till 6pm.

The downpour also resulted in a fall in the temperature in Dhaka. Dhaka's highest temperature was 32.8 degrees Celsius today against Saturday's 36.0 degree.

Meanwhile, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, Dhaka, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall in the next 24 hours from 6pm today as a well-marked low over the West Central Bay and adjoining North Bay off North Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coast is now lying over the Northwest Bay and adjoining area, said the Met office.

It is likely to intensify into a monsoon depression. Under its influence, deep convection is taking place over the North Bay.

Squally weather may affect the maritime ports, North Bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh with a wind speed of 40-50 kms/hr or more.

Due to the very heavy rainfall, landslide may occur at places over the hilly regions of Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.

The maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal No 3.

Under the influence of the well-marked low, the low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Cox's Bazar, Chittagong, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Chandpur, Barguna, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barisal, Pirojpur, Jhalakati, Bagerhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by wind driven surge of 1-2 feet height above normal astronomical tide.

All fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay have been advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution till further notice.
