Incessant rain triggered by monsoon depression has inundated many areas of the Chittagong city, throwing the normal life into total disarray.

Met office said downpours started on Sunday evening under the influence of the depression and continued throughout the day on Monday, reports UNB.

As a result, the low-lying areas of the city, including Halishahar, Agrabad Bepari para, Access road, Chhoto Pole, Boro Pole, Agrabad CDA, JEC intersection, Chawkbazar, Chandgaon, Badurtala, Sholoshahar, Al Falah lane, Bakalia and Katalganj, went under knee-deep water, causing immense sufferings to the dwellers.

Some areas were submerged under waist-deep water due to the torrential rain. The ground floors of some houses and shops also went under water.

Some were seen wading through the knee-deep water while some others took rickshaws to reach their destinations.

Meteorologist at Patenga Met office Sheikh Farid Ahmed said the heavy rain started on Sunday evening due to the depression and thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty wind also occurred at night.

He said they recoded 151 mm of rainfall in the port city in 24 hours till Monday noon.

‘There’s no respite from the perennial water-logging in the port city. I saw entire Agrabad under water after I got up from sleep in the morning,’ MA Quader, a resident of the area, told UNB.

Meanwhile, the loading and unloading activities were suspended at Chittagong seaport on Monday morning as the maritime port along with three others was advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal No 3, said Chittagong port director (transport) Golam Sarwar.
