BNP on Friday alleged that the deposits by Bangladeshis in Switzerland’s different banks marked a sharp rise as the ‘ruling party’ men are siphoning off their ill-gotten money there.

‘The Swiss National Bank launched a series of annual reports titled ‘Banks in Switzerland 2016’ on Thursday revealing that deposits by Bangladeshis in Switzerland’s different banks rose further as over a thousand crore taka has been deposited there within a year,’ said BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, reports UNB.

Speaking at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office, he further said, ‘The ruling party men mainly siphoned off the money that they made through looting and corruption.’

Referring to Finance Minister AMA Muhith’s remark that the banking sector is in a very bad shape, the BNP leader said people believe that Awami League leaders plundered the country’s banks, and deposited the money in the Swiss banks.

He warned that those who siphoned off money abroad will be put on trial someday through a proper investigation.

Rizvi said the Finance Minister now cannot take action against the money launderers as the ruling party high ups are involved with it.

He also criticised the government for its ‘failure’ to identify those who indulged in plundering of banks and other financial institutions and mete out punishment to them.

The BNP leader came down hard on Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader for his comments that this year’s eid journey was the most comfortable one in Bangladesh history, saying the minister mocked with public sufferings through his remark.

Rizvi said though most of the media ran news and published photos on public sufferings of holidaymakers due to gridlocks, Quader is trying to hide the truth.

He also accused Quader of presenting false statistics before parliament on road crash casualties on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. ‘The minister told parliament that 40 people were killed in road accidents this time. It’s a blatant lie. Around 125 people were killed before and after the Eid.’
