Flood situation deteriorates further in Gaibandha

Gaibandha: Overall flood situation in chars and Brahmaputra river basin areas of the district deteriorated further as the river marked rise more in last 24 hours till at 9:00am.

The officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said here the water level in the Brahmaputra rose by 3cm during the period and it was flowing 14cm above its danger level at  Fulchharighat point of the district.

On the other hand, the Ghagot which was flowing through the main land of the district rose by 1cm during the period and was flowing just one cm below its danger mark at New Bridge Road point of the district town this morning, sources said.

With the rise of water level in the Brahmaputra, the chars and the river basin areas of Sundarganj, Sadar Fulchhari and Saghata upazila had been inundated making hundreds of char dwellers marooned.

Due to flood, a total of 35 hectares of land of standing crops particularly jute, Aman seed bed and summer vegetables went under flood water, said deputy director of Department of Agriculture Extension AKM Ruhul Amin.

A total of 14 government primary schools of Fulchhari and Shaghata upazilas had been closed and the academic activities had also been suspended there temporarily as the school and its field went under 3

to 5 feet deep water due to flood, said M. Aminul Islam Mondal, district primary education officer.

Different places of the flood control embankment have become more vulnerable by the river eroded people who built houses on the embankment through cutting its earth unlawfully.

The vulnerable points of the embankment are being protected through dumping sand bags and earth at the initiative of the BWDB.

Executive engineer of BWDB Mahbubur Rahman said all the officials and the employees were patrolling the flood control embankments round the clock so that none could damage the embankment to create untold sufferings.

Deputy Commissioner Goutam Chandra Pal said the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief allotted 125 tonnes of rice as general relief and Taka 4.50 lakh that would be distributed to the flood victims in Gaibandha shortly to mitigate their sufferings.
