Joypurhat: Two people were crushed to death by a train at Parulia in Sadar upazila of Joypurhat on Sunday morning.

The deceased are Majibar Rahman, in his seventies, of Paschim Parulia village, and Aminul Islam, in his thirties, of nearby Puranapoil village.

Witnesses and railway sources said the Chilahati-bound inter-city train ‘Titumir Express’ was approaching Majibar, a hearing impaired, who was sitting on the rail line at about 10:00am. However, he did not notice the train.

Aminul who was catching fish in a nearby pond started screaming asking the elderly man to move away. However, he could not hear his voice which was drowned out by the sound of a power tiller cultivating land.

Sensing imminent danger, Aminul rushed to Majibar and pushed him away to save him. However, it was too late. The train hit both of them, leaving Majibar dead on the spot and Aminul injured.

Aminul was taken to Joypurhat Modern Hospital where he died after some time.
