Gaibandha:An elderly man was killed and seven people were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers over a land dispute at Chandipur Madhyapara village in Sundarganj upazila on Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Shahid Miah, in his sixties, a resident of the village.

Sundarganj Police officer-in-charge Mozammel Haque said there had been a longstanding dispute between Shahid Miah and his neighbours Chan Muhuri and Based Miah over the ownership of a piece of land at the village.

As a sequel of the conflict, the supporters of Chan Miah attacked Shahid with sharp weapons and chopped him indiscriminately when both the groups went to the land to take its control at noon, leaving eight people injured.

Of them, Shahid died on the way to hospital.

On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control. They also arrested seven people in this connection.
