Rangpur: A schoolgirl was killed and her mother and sister were injured by lightning in Gomostapara village under Boda upazila of Panchagarh district this noon, said police, hospital and local sources.

The deceased is Tanya Akhter, a teen-ager, a student of class X of nearby Chandanbari High School.

The tragic incident occurred when thunderbolt stuck kitchen at their house while Tanya, her sister Sabina Yasmin, and mother Lailey Begum were engaged in cooking lunch there amid inclement weather.

All of them were injured in the incident and taken to Boda Upazila Health Complex where attending Medical Officer Dr M R Reza declared Tanya dead.

Tanya's mother Lailey Begum and her sister Sabina Yasmin have been undergoing treatment at the Health Complex now.

Boda police officer-in-charge of Abul Kalam Azad and Chairman of local Chandanbari Union Parishad Moazzem Hossain confirmed the incident.
