Man to die for killing wife in Barisal

Barisal: A court in Barisal on Monday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife in 2009.

The convict was identified as Shah Alam Hawladar, in his forties, of Uttar Bisharkandi village in Banaripara upazila. The court also fined him Tk 10,000.

According to the prosecution, Laiju Khanam, 28, wife of Shah Alam was beaten to death by her husband following an altercation over his extramarital relationship with another woman on 20 January 2009.

Dulal Hossain, brother of the victim, filed a case with Banaripara Police Station on the following day.

Banaripara police sub-inspector Manjit Chandra Sheel, also the investigation officer of the case, submitted chargesheet against three people–Shah Alam, Shahida Begum and her associate Yunus Haldar–on 15 June 2009.

After examining the records and 10 witnesses Barisal District and Session Judge Anwarul Haque handed down the verdict while acquitting two other accused as allegation brought against them could not be proved.
