10 BNP leaders, activists held in Gazipur
Gazipur: Police arrested at least 10 leaders and activists of BNP for ‘sabotage plan’ from different places of the city during a drive continuing for 24 hours till Sunday morning.
Police sources said 10 leaders and activists of BNP were arrested for planning subversive activities in support of the ongoing 72-hour nationwide hartal, enforced by the BNP-led 20-party alliance.
Of the arrestees, four leaders and activists were arrested from Joydebpur, one from Sreepur and five from Kaliakoir areas.
The alliance called the shutdown as part of its movement demanding a snap national election under a non-party administration and ‘resorting democracy and people’s voting right’ and protesting government’s repressive acts.
BNP joint secretary general Salahuddin Ahmed, on behalf of the alliance, announced the shutdown programme on Friday.
