Chittagong: A man was killed when a passenger train collided with a covered-van at Barkunda of Shittakunda in Chittagong early on Tuesday.

Sitakunda fire service officials said a Chittagong-bound Bijoynagar Express train from Mymensingh collided with a powder milk-laden covered-van near Barobkunda rail track at about 5:00am.

The accident also claimed the drivers of the train and covered-van severely injured. Fire fighters recovered them and sent to local hospital.

However, five compartments of the train were also derailed during the accident. The derailment snapped the railway communication of Chittagong with rest of the country.

Bangladesh Railway Eastern divisional railway manager Mofizur Rahman said a three-member probe body has formed in this connection.

Two salvage trains from Laksham and Chittagong went to the spot at about 8:00am and have started rescue operation.
