Sylhet: Teachers of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST), who were protesting to demand the removal of the vice-chancellor (VC) on Sunday morning, were assaulted allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists.

The victims are Dr Yasmeen Haque, wife of Prof Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, Prof Mohammad Yunus, former president of SUST Teachers’ Association, inclement president of the association Prof Abdul Goni, Prof ANK Somaddar, Prof Sayed Shamsul Islam, Associate Prof Faruk Uddin, and Mostafa Kamal Masud.

Witnesses said the teachers gathered in front of the VC building to take part in a scheduled sit-in programme at about 9:00am demanding the removal of VC.

The programme was arranged by Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikshok Porishod.

Earlier at about 6:00am, some Chhatra League leaders and activists took position in front of the VC building. The BCL activists claimed themselves as students and involved in an arguments with the teachers.

However, panic spread when the VC, Aminul Islam Bhuiyan came to his office at about 8:00am. The teachers blocked the way to VC’s office room while the BCL activists took him to his room. 

At one stage, the BCL activists attacked the teachers and pushed them on the floor.  

Convenor of Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikshok Porishod Syed Shamsul Alam said university Chhatra League president Abu Sayed Akand, assistant president Anjan Roy, joint general secretary Sajedul Islam Sobuj led the attack.
