4 Bangladeshis among Libya boat capsize victims
Narayanganj: Four people, including three of a family, are among the 24 Bangladeshis died after two boats carrying about 500 migrants capsized in Libya hail were residents of Narayanganj.
They are Ramjan Ali, his wife Sahera Khatun, and their son Yusuf Ali, of Hariharpara village in Sadar upazila, and the other is Mahmud.
Ramjan’s family members said two other sons—Yeasin, and Redwan, and one daughter Khadiza, 11— of the couple were rescued in the incident.
Ramjan had been living in Libya along with his family members since 1988.
On 27 August, at about 2:00am, two boats carrying around 500 migrants, including reportedly Bangladeshis, capsized off the Libyan Coastal Town of Zuwara located around 300kilometer west of Tripoli, while crossing the Mediterranean Sea.
Counsellor (Labour), Bangladesh Embassy to Libya, now shifted in Tunisia, Ashraful Islam said over phone from Libya that 78 Bangladeshis, including children and women, had been in the two boats. Of them, 54 were rescued alive.
