SUST teachers announce 3-day work abstention
Sylhet: A section of pro-liberation teachers of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) on Monday announced a three-day work abstention programme from Tuesday protesting Sunday’s attack on their colleagues allegedly by BCL men.
The announcement came at a meeting of Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikkhak Parishad held on the campus in the evening.
The programme is also meant for demanding immediate removal of SUST Vice-chancellor Professoressor Dr Aminul Haque Bhuiya, convener of the Parishad Professoressor Syed Shamsul Alam said.
The teachers will bring out a rally holding black badges on the campus at about 10:00am on Tuesday and will observe the same programme on Wednesday.
They will observe a token hunger strike in front of the VC office on Thursday along with the work abstention.
Meanwhile, the pro-liberation teachers on Monday observed a three-hour work abstention protesting the Sunday’s attack.
Campus sources said they brought out a rally wearing black badges from Teachers’ Canteen at about 10:45am.
Later, they held a protest meeting in front of VC’s building demanding investigation into the incident and punishment of the attackers.
Chaired by Parishad convener Professor Syed Shamsul Alam, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Professor Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, his wife Professor Dr Yasmeen Haque, Professor Mohammad Yunus, Dipen Debnath, Faruk Uddin, Mostafa Kamal Masud and Omar Faruk.
On Monday, the university authorities formed a three-member probe committee over the incident.
Earlier, 10 teachers of the university were assaulted allegedly by leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in front of the vice-chancellor’s office on Sunday morning.
The teachers had been on a movement demanding the removal of VC Professor Aminul Haque Bhuiyan.
However, the university unit BCL denied the allegation of attacking the teachers.
