Assaulting SUST teachers: 3 BCL leaders suspended
Sylhet: Three leaders of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), student wing of the Awami League, were suspended on Monday on charge of assaulting seven teachers of the university in an attack on Sunday.
They are Abu Sayeed Akanda and Anjan Ray, senior vice-presidents of SUST unit BCL, and Sajedul Islam Sabuj, senior joint secretary of the same unit.
BCL central committee president Saifur Rahman said the unit’s central executive committee took the decision at its meeting on Monday night.
Besides, the committee served show cause notices to the trio, the president added.
The seven teachers were assaulted allegedly by the leaders and activists of BCL in front of the vice-chancellor’s office on Sunday morning.
Professor Syed Shamsul Islam, convener of Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikkhak Parishad, a pro-liberation teachers’ forum, said a group of BCL leaders and activists swooped on a teachers’ demonstration on the campus at about 8:30am and physically assaulted them.
The teachers had been on a movement demanding removal of VC Aminul Haque Bhuiyan.
The teachers were to attend a sit-in programme in front of the Administrative Building, to be held from 9:00am to 5:00pm.
The victims are Professor Yasmeen Haque, wife of Professor Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, Professor Mohammad Yunus, former president of SUST Teachers’ Association, Professor Abdul Goni, incumbent general secretary of the association, Professor ANK Somaddar, Professor Sayed Shamsul Islam, Associate Professor Faruk Uddin and Mostafa Kamal Masud.
