Dhaka: The government will reward people for information leading to the busting of illegal voice over internet protocol (VoIP) gangs.

Posts and Telecommunications Division on Thursday announced a Tk 1 lakh reward for such information.

A press release signed by M Raihan Akhter, senior assistant secretary to the division, said as per the Bangladesh Telecommunications ACT-2001, it is punishable offence to transmit international calls bypassing the proper channel. ‘The government is conducting continuous drives to check the crime.’

The release said a Tk 1-lakh reward will be given to those who will assist the government proving with the identities and addresses of the illegal VoIP traders after verifying their information.

The information can directly be sent to the posts and telecommunications secretary and the chairman of Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC).

The identity of the informants will not be disclosed, the press release added.
