64 CU students sent to court

Police on Monday sent 64 students of Chittagong University (CU) who were detained following a clash between two rival groups to the court.

Among the detained 64 students, two were shown arrested in CU student Tapos Sarkar murder case while the rest 62 were sent to the court under section 151 on charges of creating violence, said Officer-in-charge (OC-investigation) Salah Uddin of Hathazari police station.

The activists of two CU shuttle train compartment-based students' groups-'Varsity Xpress (VX)' and 'Choose Friends with Care (CFC)' locked in a series of chase and counter chase on the campus on Sunday morning over establishing supremacy.

The students also locked the CU administrative building and teachers' club and manhandled some teachers who went to the spot to cool down the students.

After the incidents, Hathazari police conducted raids at Shahjalal Hall and Shah Amanat Hall and detained 64 students for their involvement in the incidents.

Meanwhile, the CU authority on Monday noon formed a four-member probe committee headed by Law Faculty Dean Prof Abdullah Faruk to investigate into the incidents.

The other members of the probe committee are- assistant proctor Mohammad Yakub, Abdur Rab Hall provost Prof Rashedun Nabi and F Rahman Hall provost Prof  SM Monirul Hasan.

The committee has been asked to submit its report within shortest possible time, said CU proctor Mohammad Siraz-ud-Dowllah.
