7-murder cases: Court orders confiscation of property of 5 accused

Narayanganj: A court in Narayanganj on Sunday asked police to confiscate the property of five absconding accused in the sensational Narayanganj seven-murder cases.

Passing the order, Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate HM Shafiqul Islam asked the officers-in-charge of Manda, Bagati, Bakerganj, Nandail and Lalpur police stations to submit reports in this regard by 7 October, said Golam Hossain, sub-inspector of court police.

The five accused are Corporal Mokhlesur Rahman and sepoys Abdul Alim, Al Amin Sharif, and Tajul Islam and assistant sub-inspector Kamal Hossain of Rapid Action Battalion.

Earlier, police submitted reports on seizing property of eight fugitive accused, including Nur Hossain, in the cases before the court.

The other fugitive accused are sepoy Mahiuddin Munshi, Sergeant Enamul Kabir, constable Habibur Rahman Habib, Salaullah Sana, Manager Shahjahan, Jamal Uddin and Selim.

Besides, police produced 22 accused named in chargesheet before the court amid strong security in the morning.

On 8 April, detectives submitted chargesheet against 35 people, including three sacked RAB officials –Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Major Arif Hossain and Lt Commander MM Rana–and Nur Hossain, in connection with the sensational seven murders.

Of them, 22 were arrested while 13, including prime accused Nur Hossain, remained absconding since the murders.

On 27 April last, Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam and his three associates and driver were abducted from Fatullah area in the city. At the same time, senior lawyer of the Narayanganj District Judge's Court, Chandan Kumar Sarker, and his driver were abducted on their way to capital Dhaka.

Three days into their abduction, the bodies of six people, including that of Nazrul and Chandan, were recovered from the Shitalakhya river on 30 April.

Besides, the body of Jahangir, the car driver of Nazrul Islam, was recovered from the Shitalakhya River on 1 May.

Later, the two cases were filed in connection with the murders. Nazrul's wife Selina Islam Beauty filed a case against six people, including NCC councillor Nur Hossain, while Chandan's son-in-law Bijoy Kumar Paul filed the other case against some unknown people.

Later, Shahidul Islam, Nazrul's father-in-law, claimed that Rab officials killed Nazrul and others in exchange for Tk 6 crore from city councillor Nur Hossain, the prime accused in the murder case, and other accomplices.

The three former officials of RAB-11 in Narayanganj-Lt Col Tareque Sayeed Mohammad, Major Arif Hossain and Navy's Lt Commander MM Rana­–were sent on forced retirement for their alleged involvement in the incident. They are now in jail.

On 14 June last, Paschimbanga police arrested Nur Hossain from an apartment in Kolkata. Meanwhile, Beauty who was present at the court expressed her dissatisfaction over the exclusion of the names of five FIR-named accused in the charge sheet. She also said she would take recourse to law against the exemption.
