At least six people were killed and 10 others were injured on Friday morning after a truck hit a Dhaka-bound bus on Gorai Highway of Mirzapur in Tagail.

Two of the deceased were identified as Sirajul Islam, 32, and Ashraful Islam, 35. Identities of the rest could not be known immediately. All of them are day labourers and RMG workers, police said.

Meanwhile, the country witnessed 388 road accidents in June that left 459 people dead and 618 injured, according to passengers' welfare body Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity.

The number of road accidents in the country rose 56 percent and fatalities 57 percent in June compared to May, it said.

During this time, 368 people were killed and 518 others injured in 358 road, railway, and waterway accidents.

In 2019, 8,543 people were killed and 14,318 injured in 6,210 road, railway, and waterway accidents.

Of them, 5,516 road accidents left 7,855 people dead and 13,330 injured.

Deaths in road crash rose 8.07 percent in 2019 compared to 2018.

Reckless driving, risky overtaking, dilapidated roads, unfit vehicles, unskilled drivers, using mobile phones or headphones while driving, and lack of awareness among road users were cited as main reasons behind road crashes.

Officer-in-Charge of Gorai Highway Police Station Md Mojaffar Hossain said a bus of Sheba Classic Paribahan was parked in Kurai area due to mechanical glitch while a goods-laden truck hit it, killing four people on the spot.

Two more died after being taken to the hospital, he said.

Three among the injured are in critical condition, the OC said.

The driver of the truck managed to flee, Hossain said adding that they are preparing to file a case in this regard.
