Shoe manufacturers demand cut in raw materials import duty
Dhaka: Shoe manufacturers in Dhaka on Sunday demanded imposition of only 3 percent duty on the import of raw materials of shoe manufacturing industries cancelling all other duties.
They also urged the government to impose 300 percent supplementary duty on import of shoes aiming to protect local shoe manufacturers.
The shoe manufacturers came up with the demand at a human chain programme, arranged by Bangladesh Leather and Rexine National Shoe Manufacturers Association, in front of the National Press Club.
They alleged that a section of greedy traders is importing shoes showing low import cost, which push the local shoe manufacturers in trouble.
Association president MA Bhasani and shoes manufacturers Humayun Kabir, Shafiur Rahman, Dudal Saha, Md Hasan and Alamgir Sheikh, among others, attended the programme.
Later, they submitted an application to Finance Minister AMA Muhith in this regard.
