Tanners set prices of rawhides
Dhaka: Tanners on Friday set the prices of different rawhides of sacrificial animals during the Eid-ul-Azha.
Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA), Bangladesh Hide and Skin Merchants Association (BHSMA) and Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leather-goods and Footwear Exporters’ Association (BFLLFEA) jointly announced the prices of rawhides at a press conference at a city hotel in Dhanmondi in Dhaka.
As per the announcement the tanners will buy per square feet of salted cowhide maximum at Tk 50 in Dhaka and Tk 40 across the country outside Dhaka, salted goatskin at Tk 20 and Tk 15 respectively.
The traders said this year they offer lower rates for the rawhides due to a drop in demand for leather and leather goods in the international markets.
Md Shakawat Ullah, General Secretary of Bangladesh Tanners’ Association hoped some 50-60 lakh cowhides will be collected during this Eid.
Earlier on 5 September, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed urged tanners to announce fair prices for rawhide within the next 48 hours.
The minister said rational prices of rawhide will have to be ensured keeping pace with the international market prices so that people are not deprived of fair prices.
